Michigan Travelers: It Just Got a LOT Easier to Renew Passports
It is time to take a trip and it just got easier to renew your passports.
How To Renew Passports
The United States Department of State announced Wednesday that Michigan residents can renew their passports online.
After testing it in pilot programs, however, now it is fully operational.
Secretary of State, Antony Blinken shared a statement about the new online process.
There are a few stipulations that go into online passport renewal.
If your passport expired within the past five years or will be expiring in the coming year, you can use the online renewal process.
However, the online portal is not available for the following situations:
- children passports
- first-time pass applicants for renewal applicants who live outside the US
- expedited applications
As for payment, there will be no change to the existing passport processing fees. You will still pay $130 for a regular renewal.
The online passport renewal process is rather easy.
Step One: Confirm that you meet the requirements.
Step Two: Create your account
Step Three: Start your passport application
Step Four: Enter information about your most recent passport.
Step Five: Enter your travel plans
Step Six: Upload a digital photo according to the passport photo guidelines
Step Seven: Sign and Pay
Then, you are done with the application process!
According to the website, it will take roughly 6-8 weeks. However, mailing times are not included in the processing time. This timeframe only includes the time your application is at one of the passport agencies or centers.
