According to a new study, Michigan is among the top ten most hated states in the country.

And before we go blaming other states (*ahem* Ohio), the hate is coming from those who live here too...

Career website Zippia says that to determine their ranking of the least-liked states, they looked at data from each state's residents and the country as a whole.

They compared each state across three metrics:

  • The percent of residents who told Gallup their state is the “worst possible state to live in”
  • The states with the biggest decrease in population
  • Nationwide, the number of other states who say the hate a state the most (according to an Instagram poll)

So where does The Mitten State stand? According to Zippia, we're the 7th most hated state in the nation.

Here's Michigan's breakdown:

  • Population Decrease: -0.09%
  • % Of Residents Who Say It’s Worst State: 9%
  • States That Hate It: 1

Yikes. So mostly it seems what's put us in the top ten is our OWN dislike of living here. Why do you think that is? Here are some suggestions Zippia tosses out:

There is no denying some people really dislike the state they live in. Whether its job opportunities, cost of living, or recreation some states just don’t stack up.

Or maybe it's because of a few things on things on the list below?

Now, Zippia doesn't tell us which state hates us... but I bet you can guess...

Although surprisingly, Ohio isn't one of the most hated states? Well, they're not in the top ten, but they're up there --  Ohio is ranked No. 12.

Here's Zippia's list of the Top Ten Most Hated States in the U.S.

  2.  New Jersey
  3. New York
