UM Baseball Headed To College World Series [Video]

The University of Michigan baseball team stunned top ranked UCLA over the weekend in LA, advancing the Wolverines to the College World Series for the first time since 1984.

The Super Regional between Michigan and UCLA came down to a winner take all third game Sunday night. Michigan's starting pitcher Tommy Henry (Portage Northern) tossed seven innings of shut out ball to lead the Wolverines to a 4-2 win, while Ako Thomas drove in two runs to pace the Wolverines offensively.

The trip to the College World Series in Omaha is their 8th overall and their first since 1984, when former Cincinnati Reds shortstop Barry Larkin captained the team.

The team last won a NCAA baseball title in 1962 when former Detroit Tigers All Star catcher Bill Freehan was a member of the team.

In addition to Portage's Henry, other West Michigan area Wolverines include Rockford's Jack Weisenberger and Portage pitchers Ben Keizer and Jeff Criswell.
