Patients of one West Michigan doctor are being encouraged to consider HIV and hepatitis testing, as the doctor is being accused of reusing medical devices on multiple patients.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services says, on May 21, the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs issued a complaint against Dr. Roger D. Beyer. Beyer owns Urological Solutions of Michigan and Women’s Health Care Specialists. The complaint alleges Beyer instructed his staff to reuse anorectal manometers on multiple patients. The devices are only approved for single-patient use by the FDA. The complaint also says the devices "were cleaned inconsistently between patients."

The medical group often performed procedures at long-term care and skilled nursing facilities in West Michigan.

Anorectal manometry is a test performed to evaluate patients with constipation or incontinence. During the test, a small, flexible tube with a balloon at the end is inserted into the rectum. Anorectal manometers can also be used in pelvic muscle rehabilitation.

There have not been any reports of disease associated with these complaints.
