Happy National Unfriend Day!

What started out as a silly holiday by Jimmy Kimmel a few years ago has now become an annual occurrence every November 17. Basically, Facebook users (who choose to participate) take a look at their friends list and choose people to unfriend.

If the idea of getting rid of that guy you met at the bar that one time or your aunt who posts nothing but political articles all day long makes you uncomfortable, know that you have a social media etiquette expert's blessing to do so.

Diane Gottsman, an etiquette expert, told ABC News, "Just because you unfriend someone doesn't mean that it is a negative move. Sometimes we just need to cull our list or redirect to them to another site or venue."

With more than 1.3 billion users on Facebook, a lot of people end up being friends with old elementary school friends or ex-boyfriends, and the reality is that we don't have to keep these people around. Especially if the two of you rarely interact.

When it comes to unfriending releatives, Gottsman suggests that you "use your judgement."
