It's the time of year when TIME Magazine puts out their "Top 10 Everything of 2011" lists, and a local story has landed in the number 10 spot for "Top 10 Sports Moments". The story of Wes Leonard, and the Fennville boys' basketball team, garnered national attention this year, going so far as to earn them an ESPY nomination.

It's been over 4 months since Fennville basketball player Wes Leonard died after scoring the game-winning shot to clinch a perfect season, but Leonard will never be forgotten.

Fennville boys basketball teams road to the state finals is one of three sporting events nominated for ESPN's ESPY award for Best Moment of 2011.  Roy Halladay's playoff no-hitter and Trevor Bayne's Daytona 500 win are the other two events nominated.

Sadly, tragedy overshadowed this year's race after former GVSU linebacker and father of three, Jason Kinzler, died a mile from the 25k finish line...

ESPN's "Outside The Lines" has debuted a 16-minute story on Wes Leonard. Leonard was a 16-year-old basketball star at Fennville High School.  He died on March 23rd after scoring the winning basket to clinch an undefeated regular season for Fennville...

All eyes this basketball season have been on a small town high school team in Fennville called the Blackhawks. March third, one of their close teammates died of a heart attack after leading them into the playoffs, undefeated! #35 will forever be remembered as the number Wes Leonard chose to wear each time he led his team to victory before his tragic death.

For me, and hopefully for you, it has been really neat to see the Fennville community, as well as surrounding communities come together and lift up the Leonard family after Wes unexpectedly died after throwing the winning shot to advance his team to the play-offs on March 3rd. Two days after Fennville basketball player Wes Leonard fatally collapsed (of an undiagnosed enlarged heart) after making the winning shot for his team on Thursday ... Mary Lefere of Catholic Central was hospitalized after being critically injured in a car crash in Wyoming.

Moments after Wes Leonard led Fennville to another win in overtime, over Bridgman, last night he collapsed and later died at the hospital! The cause of the 16-year old's death is not yet known.
