When businesses were allowed to reopen again it came with a set of rules, guidelines, and protocols that they had to enforce to ensure safety of employees and customers. However, there were some businesses who failed to comply which resulted in a fine from the state.

In a news release, the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA) said they cited 19 businesses across the state for not taking the necessary precautions. Inspectors determined these companies committed "serious violations" such as

...a lack of health screenings, face coverings, employee training, cleaning measures and overall preparedness plans.

Of those 19 that were citied, seven of the businesses are located in West Michigan. Most were fined for the same things:

  • American Eagle Home Improvement (Bangor) - fined $2,100 for lack of social distancing and not wearing masks.
  • Dave's Glass Service, Inc. (Kalamazoo) - $2,100 fine for not wearing face coverings, lack of a preparedness plan, and not training employees on COVID-19 guidelines.
  • D&D Roofing 4G, LLC (Fremont) - $2,800 for lack of plan and failing to train employees on COVID-19 guidelines.
  • Kauffman Construction, Inc. (Newaygo) - $2,100 fine for not having face coverings, no social distance, fail to train employees, and no preparedness plan.
  • Nain Construction (Grand Rapids) - $2,100 for failing to wear a face covering, lack of plan, failure to train employees on COVID-19 guidelines, and failure to maintain/retain documentation for daily health screenings.
  • Valentin Roofing, LLC (Kalamazoo) - $2,100 fine for no face coverings, not maintaining social distancing, failure to train employees on guidelines, and no preparedness plan
  • West Olive Nursery, Inc. (West Olive) - $2,100 for not wearing masks, no social distancing in place, failure to conduct daily health screenings, lack of a preparedness plan, and not training employees.

A total of $51,400 in fines were given out in Michigan. All businesses have 15 days to contest the citations and show MIOSHA that they've remedied the issues.
