Ten month year old, Addison, was born profoundly deaf (the most severe form of deafness). On Tuesday Addison was fitted with cochlear implants. The first words the baby girl heard were " Addison, I love you" from her mother, Akilah Elander.

Most of the time ear implants are recommended to children over the age one but researchers are beginning to recommend them as young as 9 months old. This age is an important stage in the child's language acquisition. The more a child learns younger the better. 1 in 1000 children are born with hearing difficulties. Implants can help save parents between $20,000 and $30,000 dollars due to the likelihood the child would be placed in mainstream classrooms.
