Too Hot to Bear: Michigan Cub Beats the Heat in a Bay
I don’t have to tell you that we’ve been seeing unseasonably warm weather this summer here in Michigan. Even the wildlife in the Upper Peninsula are looking for unique ways to cool off this summer.
An adorable black bear cub was recently caught on camera taking a break from the summer heat with a splashy swim in Betsie Bay near Elberta, Michigan.
The sweet sight was captured by the sous chef at The Cabbage Shed, one of the area’s favorite top-rated waterfront restaurants.
It’s been unseasonably hot across the state this week, and the Upper Peninsula hasn’t been spared. The folks at The Cabbage Shed say they’re used to seeing wildlife from time to time, but this was a rare and heart-melting treat to spot the cub taking a splash.
The little bear seemed completely content as it paddled in the bay, clearly enjoying a refreshing break from the sweltering sun (just like the rest of us.)
While seeing a bear might sound a little alarming at first, experts say that most black bears in Michigan are shy and harmless as long as they’re left alone. If you do happen to stumble across one enjoying a swim or a snack, it’s best to quietly keep your distance and let them go about their day.

This little cub has quickly become a local celebrity, with social media already buzzing over the video. It’s just another reminder of how special (and adorable) life can be up north, especially when the locals include furry swimmers who know how best to keep cool.
