Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, March 2. Thousands of West Michigan Catholics will observe the Lenten practice of abstaining from eating meat each Friday until Easter, Sunday, April 17, and many parishes in the Diocese of Grand Rapids will host Friday fish frys. However, this year, some won't.

Local catholic churches are re-shaping their traditional fish frys. Partly due to the pandemic but also due to supply chain issues, port closures and inflation.

Over the past year, some seafood prices rose almost 50% to 60%. Rather then turn the cost over to parishioners, one church is canceling their fish fry. It's the first time in 13 years that West Catholic High School has canceled their fundraising event that would serve up to 1,400 people every Friday of Lent.

Cynthia Kneibel, president & CEO of West Catholic High School, told Fox 17,

"We could not place an order, and towards the end of December right before Christmas, the fish fry crew that has been just amazing over the last 13 years, let us know that they still could not place the fish order."

Citing difficulty planning and higher prices for fish and serving supplies, Blessed Sacrament at 2275 Diamond Ave has cancelled their annual fish fry too.
