A football player in Saranac, Mich. collapsed during practice and was rushed to the hospital where he later died.

According to WOOD, during the youth football practice at Saranac Jr/Sr High a player collapsed during a non contact drill around 7 p.m. on Wednesday and had to be air lifted to an area hospital.

The school district made a Facebook post explaining what had happened to the player during the practice.

The teen had CPR performed on him on the field before EMT's took him to the hospital.

Spectrum Health officials later confirmed that the boy had died.

Saranac Community Schools Superintendent Jason Smith said in a statement:

With a heavy heart Saranac Community Schools is mourning the loss of one of our very own 7th graders. The student passed away late last night at the hospital, after a medical emergency during the Saranac Community Youth Football practice.

Supports are available at the school from local counseling agenies and school districts. Supports will be in place district wide for as long as needed.
