This West Michigan University Has a Free Dinosaur Park on Campus
If you’re looking for something fun, free, and slightly unexpected to do in West Michigan, let me put this one on your radar.
Tucked onto the campus of Western Michigan University is a spot that feels like a tiny hidden Jurassic Park. It’s called Dinosaur Park, and yes, they have life-size dinosaur replicas you can walk right up to with no admission fee, no reservations, and no strings attached.
The outdoor Dinosaur Park is part of WMU’s Schmaltz Geology and Mineral Museum, and it’s open to the public at any time.
You can wander through the rock garden and suddenly find yourself face-to-face with a towering brachiosaurus, a triceratops, or a spinosaurus that makes you do a double take. It turns a quick walk into a full stop, especially if you’ve got kids (or if you’re an adult who still thinks dinosaurs are cool, no judgment here).
If you want to take it a step further, head inside the Schmaltz Geology and Mineral Museum, which is also free to visit. The museum houses an impressive collection of rocks, minerals, and fossils from Michigan and around the world, including the newly renovated James H. Duncan Jr. Mineral Exhibit, fossil mastodon bones from Van Buren County, and a massive copper boulder shaped like the Michigan mitten (because of course it is).
There’s also an ultraviolet mineral display, an interactive augmented reality sandbox, and a jaw-dropping collection of fossil shark teeth. So you can enjoy something educational without feeling stuffy.
The museum itself is open Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm, with the friendly reminder that it’s part of an active university building, so you’ll want to be mindful of classes in session. The outdoor rock garden and Dinosaur Park, though, are open whenever you feel like wandering through.
It’s a West Michigan gem for dinosaur lovers. Whether you’re planning a cheap family outing, looking for a unique weekend walk, this one’s worth knowing about.
