WZZM-13 reports that after months of deliberation and design process, they've got a new mascot for the 2020-2021 school year.

In a meeting Monday night, Godfrey-Lee Board of Education unanimously voted to adopt the name "Legends".

In a post to Facebook, Godfrey-Lee shared they'd gotten almost 200 unique name submissions.

A committee of staff, parents, community and board members narrowed it to ten names that "aligned with the district's vision and strategic design."

Students in grades 8-11 then voted to decide the top two names. The top two from this process were "Legends" and "Raptors," with Legends being preferred by a "large margin", the school says.

No artwork or graphic representation has been adopted yet. The board says that will be considered in a future meeting.

In a previous release about their old mascot, the board had said:

“Lee Rebels” and the associated symbolism and historic relationship did not reflect the diversity of our district, the community, and the world in which our students will live, work and raise a family.
Board members cited the broader context of how the phrase “Lee Rebels” is internalized and perceived both in and out of the community. Board members said they hope the spirit of being a Rebel continues to live and breathe in our school district but feared the extensive use of Confederate symbols from the past, and the current context of the name, could have a negative impact on students, staff, and families."
