WOODTV reports that Governor Whitmer has ordered flags across the state to be lowered to half-staff Thursday in honor of Michigan State Police Trooper Caleb Starr.

Trooper Starr was died this past Friday after spending a few weeks at Spectrum Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, after being hit by a suspected drunk driver on July 12th along Grand River Avenue in Boston Township, which is in Ionia County.  The 33-year-old Trooper was hit by a 28-year old female driver from Utah, who crossed over the center line and hit the trooper head-on. Both drivers were injured, but only Trooper Starr was airlifted to the hospital.

Trooper Starr had been a part of the Michigan State Police for the past two years and was based out of the Lakeview Post, WOODTV reported.

According to the Governor's press release,

The State of Michigan recognizes the duty, honor, and selfless service of Trooper Caleb Starr by lowering flags to half-staff. Michigan residents, businesses, schools, local governments, and other organizations also are encouraged to display the flag at half-staff U.S. and Michigan State flags should be lowered at public buildings and public grounds around the state.

Governor Whitmer also said in her press release,

“Trooper Caleb Starr’s passing is a devastating loss for the Michigan State Police and the entire state of Michigan. He embodied the leadership and record of service that we look for in great public servants. I want to offer my sincere condolences to his wife, Rachael, and their two young daughters.”

There's also a GOFUNDME account to help Trooper Starr's wife and children.

WOODTV says that the other driver was arraigned Monday on 4 charges including second-degree murder.
