Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has built a reputation for being both a no-nonsense leader and a politician who knows how to have a little fun on social media when she’s “off duty”. Whether she’s out “fixing the damn roads” or representing the Mitten State on the national stage, she always finds time to engage with Michiganders in a way that feels fun and relatable.

And if there’s one thing Gov. Whitmer understands, it’s the power of social media trends.

Do you have these pokemon cards still? They're worth a ton! ⬇️

Just before delivering her State of the State address on Wednesday evening, Big Gretch took a moment to participate in one of the internet’s latest viral fads, blind opening a pack of Pokémon cards. In a video posted to her social media accounts, she sat inside the House chambers, carefully unwrapping a pack of cards and seeing what she found inside:

While she was a great pull for Michigan as Governor, unfortunately, she didn’t pull anything super exciting in this pack.

It’s not the first time she’s leaned into internet culture. From referencing “big Gretch energy” to embracing memes about her iconic leather jackets, Whitmer has mastered the art of blending the importance of the governor's office while still engaging online with Michiganders just like she would if she were a regular citizen.

While some politicians struggle to connect with younger audiences, she continues to prove that staying relevant online isn’t just about racking up likes—it’s about meeting people where they are.

Of course, once the fun was over, it was back to business. But for a brief moment, before outlining the future of Michigan, Governor Whitmer reminded everyone why she remains one of the most original and fun governors in the US.
