Grand Rapids Public, Other Schools Cancel Classes Due to Heat
Students who attend Grand Rapids Public Schools are getting an extra day off this week after the school district announced Monday afternoon that classes will be canceled on Tuesday, August 27.
Students who attend GRPS are used to an occasional snow day, but it's not often that classes are canceled due to excessive heat.
It makes sense, though, as many building within the GRPS system do not have air conditioning.
In a post on X, Grand Rapids Public Schools advised students to make sure that they stay "cool and hydrated."
A few other school districts in West Michigan had already announced that they would be closing early on Tuesday, including Grand Rapids Calvin Christian (11 a.m. dismissal).
Portage Public Schools announced that they will have half days at schools within the district that do not have air conditioning. Those schools are:
- Amberly Elementary
- Angling Road Elementary
- Moorsbridge Elementary
- Haverhill Elementary
- Central Elementary
- Woodland Elementary
- Community High School
The elementary school students will be dismissed at 12:00 p.m. The high school (Community High) will dismiss at 10:45 a.m.
Additionally, the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) has issued Clean Air Action Day for Tuesday.
This is a developing story.
