If you needed proof that minor league baseball understands Michigan better than anyone, the Great Lakes Loons are trying to prove it with a new alias this season.

At some point in this upcoming season, the Loons are officially becoming the Michigan Dogmen, leaning all the way into one of the strangest and most beloved legends lurking around the mitten. (Yes, that Dogman. The one whispered about at campfires that your uncle swears he saw once up north...)

According to the team, they’re trying to give that very specific feeling of being outside in Michigan after dark. The Dogman, in their telling, isn’t a monster hiding in the woods, It’s the spirit of the wild.

For the game, Dow Diamond will be transformed into something that feels more like a campground than a ballpark. The Loons will take the field as the Michigan Dogmen, surrounded by visuals inspired by dense forests, moonlit skies, and that deep midnight blue and purple color palette that somehow screams “up north” even if you’re still in the Lower Peninsula.

The logo features the Dogman tearing through a baseball diamond, framed by trees and a glowing moon. It’s spooky without being scary, and quirky without being cheesy

Even better, you don’t have to wait for the game to get in on it. Dogmen jerseys and merchandise are already available through the Loons’ online shop for anyone who wants to embrace their inner cryptid early.

The date of the actual Dogmen game hasn’t been announced yet, but something tells me it’s going to be one of those nights people circle on the calendar the second it drops.

This is exactly the kind of thing that makes Michigan baseball fun. It’s playful. It’s a little unhinged. It knows its audience. And it turns a local legend into a shared experience instead of just a creepy story you hear once and never forget.
