The story of the flags outside Brann’s Steakhouse on Leonard Street is far from over, as I predicted.

A couple weeks ago, Brann’s got a letter from the city of Grand Rapids stating that they were in violation of a city ordinance regarding the number of signs you may have displayed outside on a building.

Johnny Brann, the owner of Brann’s is a well-known supporter of both law enforcement and military; the flags and signs outside are in honor of our fallen heroes.  At the time of receiving the letter, Brann said he was planning to file for a variance and that the flags would stay up no matter what.

Alright, now that we’re all caught up, fast forward to yesterday, WZZM13 reports that group of people showed up to Brann’s Steakhouse to show their support.  The group showed up with signs saying they stood with local law enforcement and Brann’s.

WZZM13 also says some of the motivation for the group's presence was for one of the men listed on the memorial, Eric Burri.

Also in past few days, a GoFundMe page was set up to help pay for the variance fee; It’s raised more than double what’s needed for the variance.

The city did tell WZZM13 that it wasn’t about the content of the message, it was just too many flags up for a building that size.
