One of the Mitten State's original ice cream-makers is planning to open a new dessert shop in Zeeland, according to the Holland Sentinel.

A Ludington institution, House of Flavors has been around for more than 70 years! Its roots go back even further, as it began as Miller's Dairy in the mid 1930s, producing milk, buttermilk, cottage cheese, and ice cream. In 1948, Bob Neal Sr. purchased the operation and changed the name to Park Dairy, and later to House of Flavors.

They began with five flavors of ice cream: Vanilla, Chocolate, Lemon, French Vanilla, and Blue Moon. While the origin of Blue Moon ice cream has been long-debated, House of Flavors was one of the first - if not the very first - to make it. House of Flavors now produces more than 1,400 different items in their factory between brand, flavor, and package size.

It's Bob Neal Sr.'s grandson, Barry Neal, running House of Flavors now. A longtime Zeeland resident, he's planning to open a new location at 405 Centerstone Court with Brad Lanser, whose company Joy Property Holdings owns the building, the Holland Sentinel reports.

While the Ludington location is also a restaurant, Neal says the new House of Flavors in Zeeland will focus on desserts. He tells the Holland Sentinel,

We might add a savory food like kettle corn or pretzels down the line. But right now, we're talking about 40 flavors of ice cream and homemade waffle cones. We'll also be launching 12 flavors of old-fashioned ice cream soda and we have coffee and ice cream drinks.

The plan is to open House of Flavors Zeeland by late spring. For a preview of what's to come, check out the original House of Flavor's ice cream menu here.
