The college basketball season is in full swing, with the Michigan State Spartans recently coming off a massive win against the Kentucky Wildcats. The Michigan Wolverines are ranked in the AP Top 10. Both Michigan State and the University of Michigan are 4-0 and are expected to have big seasons ahead. Despite only being four games into the season, we're already looking ahead to next season.

While the 2026 Final Four will take place on April 4 & 6 in Indianapolis at Lucas Oil Stadium (a Final Four that could easily see either Michigan program play at), it's next year that has Michiganders very excited. Why Next Year Could Be Incredible

Let's take this team by team, starting with the Spartans. Last season's BIG 10 Champions that went all the way to the Elite 8 before losing to Auburn. But much of last year's starting 5 returned, and the Spartans look like they'll remain a threat as the season continues.

But what may be the most intriguing thing about the 2026-2027 season is that Izzo currently has a top-3 recruiting class, with four ESPN Top-100 recruits signed to play under Tom Izzo. If Izzo has his most talented team the year the Final Four is hosted in Michigan, it could be just what he needs for his second National Championship.

Meanwhile, Dusty May's arrival in Ann Arbor has been a quick and substantial change for a Michigan program that went 8-26 in 2023-2024 and missed the Big Dance. In his first season with Michigan, he led the Wolverines to a Big Ten Tournament championship and a Sweet 16 appearance before Auburn knocked them out as well.

While Michigan State has a strong recruiting class next year, Michigan is poised for a fantastic season this year, considering May had the second-best transfer portal ranking, buoyed by 5-star transfer Yaxel Lendeborg and 4-star transfers Aday Mara and Morez Johnson Jr. These players, coupled with young talent already on the roster, could have them in an excellent spot for next year.

Now, it should be noted that the "hometown team" has only won the tournament three times, twice for UCLA in Los Angeles, and once for NC State. Whichever team you root for, this is an exciting time for men's basketball.
