How I Became a Detroit Lions Fan

My dad has seen every single Super Bowl on TV. So he watched a lot of football and still does. As a kid, I would often watch some of the games with him but the older I got the more I watched and the more important those games became.

I was young when the Lions played at the old Tiger Stadium in downtown Detroit but don't remember those games. I grew up about 25 minutes from the Pontiac Silverdome and remember when it was being built. Back when tickets were priced so all fans could go to games my dad took me to several. I was lucky enough to see running backs Billy Simms and Barry Sanders play in person and will never forget those experiences.

Dad and I only saw one game together at Ford Field and we were able to watch Mathew Stafford and Calvin Johnson play. We saw them beat the Chicago Bears on Monday Night Football and that was like a mini Super Bowl for us. I say that because being a Lions fan has been tough. Other than the playoff win in 1991 there was never any hope for the team. We would get excited just winning a division game. That was the closest year in my lifetime there was any real hope as a Lions fan for the team to do something great until the 2023 season.

For most Lions fans, the playoff games against the Los Angeles Chargers and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were each like little Super Bowls. This is because the Lions are never in the playoffs. I watched both games like it may be their last sitting on the edge of my seat the whole game and when they won each game I was as excited as if they had won the Super Bowl.

Most Lions fans are not even thinking about the Super Bowl because this Sunday's game against the 49ers is like another Super Bowl. Many fans were not even born when the Lions won the 1991 playoff game and most of the fans that saw the Lions beat the 49ers in the 1957 NFC Championship are dead. So what most fans have seen these past few weeks and this Sunday is brand new. The sign the fan is holding in the picture above that says "Believe" is what we all have to do. The Lions have their hands full this Sunday against the 49ers and we all have to believe that this is the most important football game of our lifetime as a Lions fan. GO LIONS!
