Grandville’s Official Facebook Page Got Hacked
It's never a good sign when you suddenly get an email about suspicious activity involving one of your accounts. It's even worse when the account in trouble is an official page with over 5,000 followers. That's what the official Facebook page for Downtown Grandville is experiencing, and they need your help getting the account shut down.
Facebook Hacked
The City of Grandville's official Facebook page, known for promoting fun events and places around the city, has been hacked and instead of promoting family-friendly activities, there are videos promoting bitcoin and livestreams of video games. This is not the official account. The Downtown Grandville team has taken to Instagram to let their followers know they are aware of the issue, and unfortunately don't appear able to reclaim control of the account.
While the hackers were posting videos, followers took notice of the unusual types of posts being made, with one person asking
What does this have to do with Grandville?
Great question, commenter. The answer is nothing, and it is best to unfollow the page and not interact with any of the content being posted. If you've been around the internet long enough, you'll recognize this as a classic scam to trick unsuspecting users into buying something they shouldn't.
Aside from the above stream, the scam also involves live-streaming video games on the hacked account to trick unsuspecting users into watching the streams. If you follow this page, report the account and unfollow it. The Downtown Grandville team has already created a new page to follow. Be safe online and if an account is acting strange, use your best judgment and do not click or interact with unusual content.
