Driving the wrong way on a highway while under the influence of alcohol can result in serious penalties. For a first-time offense, you may face up to 93 days in jail, fines ranging from $100 to $500, up to 360 hours of community service, six points added to your driving record, and a 30-day license suspension. If you are a repeat offender, the penalties become much more severe, with higher fines and the possibility of prison time.

According to the Kent County Sheriff's Office Facebook page, on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, the Sheriffs Office and Michigan State Police were called about a driver going the wrong way on US-131. The suspect was heading southbound in the northbound lanes for several miles before pulling over for deputies.

Luckily, no one was injured because of the driver, but upon further questioning, officers discovered the driver was under the influence of alcohol. You can see the full chase and the arrest in the video below.
