Lions Coach Dan Campbell Is The NFC’s 2023 Coach Of The Year
The Detroit Lions have had their best season in 67 years so it makes sense that head coach Dan Campbell has been named the NFC 2023 coach of the year.
Detroit Lions Head Coach Dan Campbell
The Lions' head coach Dan Campbell is not just a coach but also once donned the uniform of tight end from 2006 to 2009.
Before Campbell was a Detroit Lion, he got his NFL start as a New York Giant and played in Super Bowl XXXV against the Baltimore Ravens.
After the Giants, Campbell was a tight end for the Dallas Cowboys but injuries made that a short stay before becoming a Detroit Lion.
Campbell finished up his NFL playing career with the New Orleans Saints but was injured reserve for the season and didn't get a Super Bowl ring when the team won Super Bowl XLIV. That had to suck being on the Super Bowl team and not getting a ring...that was probably pretty motivating as well.
Maybe it's because of his playing experience, his playoff and Super Bowl experience, or the coaches he has worked with over the years that have the players gravitating and responding to him as a head football coach.
Lions Head Coach Dan Campbell Named 2023 NFC Coach of the Year
After Campbell finished up his playing career he stepped into the coaching world and was hired by the Miami Dolphins as a coaching intern but was quickly promoted to tight ends coach. When the Dolphins fired head coach, Joe Philbin, Campbell was named interim head coach for the remainder of the 2015 season. In 2016, Campbell was hired as the New Orleans Saints assistant head coach and tight ends coach where he worked closely with legendary head coach Sean Payton.
Fast forward to 2021 when Campbell was hired as head coach of the Detroit Lions which was a tough season with a record of 3-13-1. Things looked bleak but Campbell and the team pressed on.
The 2022 season had a rough start at 1-6 but Campbell's leadership kept the team on course and they won 8 of their next 10 games finishing with a record of 9-8.
Finishing the 2023 regular season with a record of 12-5 and their first division title in 30 years, not to mention winning two playoff games and now onto their third for a chance to win the NFC championship, Dan Campbell has been named the 2023 NFC coach of the year. It is well-deserved and hopefully, this new award will fire Campbell and the other coaches and players up for another playoff win against the San Francisco 49ers this Sunday for the NFC Championship title. GO LIONS.
