Macy’s At Rivertown Mall Is Closed: Here’s How It Looks Empty
The Rivertown Mall has changed a lot since I was a kid in the early 2000s. My parents would bring me to play at this magic treehouse to burn off some energy after church each Sunday, and because of the time I spent there growing up, the mall holds a special place in my life.

Many of the big-name stores, like Sears and Younkers, that were major draws when the mall opened, have been shut down for well over a decade and converted into new attractions, such as a trampoline park. But now another staple of the mall, Macy's, is closing at the end of this week, and it is eerie in there.
The massive, two-floor store is nearly completely empty for the first time since 1999 (then called Hudson's), and it's pretty wild to see a place that used to be so full of life so barren. So, before Macy's closed for good, I went for one more stroll around the store.
For comparison, the above TikTok shows how the store looked at the beginning of the year, full of clothes. Now, it looks like this.
With the store in its final days, everything is for sale. Light fixtures, hangers, rugs, and much of the jewelry are on clearance, and even entire shelves have price tags. The final day in business is likely Sunday, March 22nd.
The closing of the Macy's in Rivertown Crossings is part of a nationwide closure of 150 other stores as part of what Macy's is calling a "Bold New Chapter", according to WZZM 13. While it's sad to see another of the store's fixtures closing, it does provide the new owners of the mall a unique opportunity to do something big with the space now that two expansive floors have opened up.

This could perhaps lend into the rumors that residential space will be added to the mall. Don't ask me how that would work, I'm a writer, not an architect.
