Vibrant Mural Welcomes People to Grand Rapids’ New ‘River North’ District
If you have driven up Monroe Avenue or Ottawa past Michigan Street in Grand Rapids lately, you might need to do a double take. The area we have spent years calling Monroe North, or North Monroe depending on who you ask, has officially rebranded. Welcome to the River North District.
Goodbye Monroe North, Hello River North
I don't know about you, but this name change was news to me! Apparently the shift has been ongoing since March. Business leaders and city officials gathered earlier this week to make the switch official, putting the Grand River right at the center of the neighborhood's identity.
To celebrate the new era, the River North Business Association teamed up with local restaurant SILVA at 975 Ottawa Ave NW to unveil a new mural.
New Grand Rapids Mural Announces River North District
Painted by Detroit artist Mark Serra, the colorful new wall brings the neighborhood to life with hand-painted lettering, cyclists, historic brick buildings, and fish leaping out of the river. It took three and a half weeks and 25 gallons of paint to transform what used to be a plain exterior wall into a giant welcome sign for the district.

Why the Neighborhood Identity Shifted to the River
As far as the reason for the name change goes, it seems to come down to how much the neighborhood has shifted away from its old industrial warehouse roots. With Boardwalk Condos and Embassy Suites, plus staple spots like SpeakEZ Lounge, popular patios at City Built Brewing and Garage Bar, and fresh dining options like Field & Fire, the area has grown into a major riverfront destination.

Add in major improvements at 6th Street Park and Canal Street Park, and leaning into the "River" part of the name feels pretty natural.
