Remember when you were in school and you would have to line up outside for fire drills, or when you would have to be crouched in the hallway with your hands over your head while everyone awkwardly pulls their shirts down during tornado drills?

As inconvenient as those drills felt, they were important for teaching people what to do in an emergency and how to prepare before one takes place. Michigan isn't as known for natural disasters as other states, and that can lead to people getting a bit complacent in preparing for the unexpected. To ensure that Michiganders are ready, the Michigan State Police have announced a voluntary statewide tornado drill.

Voluntary Tornado Drill

Tornadoes are one of the most dangerous natural disasters in the world because of how quickly they can develop (sometimes with little warning) and because of the rain that can sometimes hide the severity of the storm. Michigan averages 15 tornadoes a year, and they are especially common during the late spring and early summer months.

That's why it is important to be prepared. On March 19 at 1:00 pm, Michigan State Police will test Michiganders' readiness. Residents may observe or hear alerts on TV and radio stations if their emergency management agencies are participating.

The Grand Rapids Office of Emergency Managment has confirmed to WGRD that Grand Rapids/Kent County will not be testing the tornado alarm for the drill but will begin their weekly tornado siren tests beginning the first Friday of April at 12:00 p.m.

Michiganders are encouraged to check out the full MI Ready preparedness sheet, which is full of in-depth information on tornadoes and the best ways to protect yourself before, during, and after a tornado.
