Tulip Time to Feature Stunning New Drone Experience
The Tulip Time Festival, first launched in 1929, holds the distinction of being the longest-running tulip festival. Over the years, it has expanded, and this year’s celebration includes an innovative high-tech drone show.
The Growing Role of Drones in Major Events
The author first saw a drone show was at Van Andel Arena during Metallica’s performance of “Moth Into Flames.” It was an incredibly visual experience that left a strong impression on me. I later saw another drone show at a Trans-Siberian Orchestra performance in December 2025. Both times, I was just as amazed as the rest of the audience.
Drone shows have become a feature of major events like the Olympic Games, the Super Bowl, and Fourth of July celebrations, among many others. It’s remarkable how far drone technology has advanced in recent years. The cost of producing a drone show is often comparable to traditional fireworks, which helps explain why more festivals are beginning to include them in their event lineups.

New Drone Event Set to Light Up Tulip Time Festival
According to WOOD TV, the Tulip Time Festival has partnered with Hudsonville Ice Cream to mark its 100th anniversary with a new drone show. The festival, which has been running for 97 years, will feature a drone display for the first time, lighting up the sky over Holland.
A fleet of 1,500 drones will take to the sky on May 9, just ahead of the Tulip Time Festival’s annual fireworks show. The display will honor 100 years of Hudsonville Ice Cream while also celebrating the heritage of West Michigan.
