This Michigan County Will Soon Begin Targeting Citizens With ICE

There seems to be a lot of concern going around the country about more people who live in the United States being deported or relocated, whether or not they are citizens of the United States.

The worry remains strong that soon, people in one county in particular will start to be the target of deportation. Jackson County, Michigan, has officially become the first county to make an agreement with the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement, better known as ICE.

The agreement, which was signed by the sheriff's department in March, could effectively lead to other counties in the state to enter into an agreement with ICE.

Christine Sauvé, a manager at the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center, expressed to the Detroit Free Press that this partnership with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is a dangerous one for the county and the state:

It's kind of a dark day for Michigan because it's the first one we've had in our state. It signals that this municipality is willing to pursue and uproot community members in a way that... jurisdictions in our state haven't done before, participating in this machine aimed at deporting folks who have been long-standing community members, curtailing due process.

Although they claim that they won’t be targeting or profiling people, and that the main target is those who have criminal charges, it has everybody a little bit on edge as to what the future will look like for those who came into the country and are hard-working citizens.
