Two Spectacular Michigan Drives for Peak Fall Color

Every fall, Michigan performs its annual magic trick: trees turn brilliant shades of red, orange, and gold, and I completely miss it because I'm staring at my neighbor's tree, wondering how one maple tree produced 47 contractor bags of leaves.

I love Michigan fall. I just spend an unreasonable portion of it fighting Michigan fall.

According to Explore Fall's 2026 Michigan foliage forecast, color moves across the state from north to south, with latitude and the Great Lakes creating some sizable differences in timing. Western Upper Peninsula color gets rolling first, while northern Lower Michigan follows in October, and southern Michigan, including the Lansing and Jackson areas, generally waits until later in the month.

Where to See Michigan's Best Fall Colors

If I'm going to appreciate leaves before stuffing them into bags, the Porcupine Mountains are tough to beat. The travel site A Dangerous Business recommends Lake of the Clouds, where the Porkies typically deliver their best colors from late September into early October. Of course, this requires a trip to the Upper Peninsula, and not everybody has an extra 8 to 10 hours to get to Ontonagon just to take in fall colors.

Closer to civilization, there's the Tunnel of Trees along M-119 between Harbor Springs and Cross Village. Its tree canopy and Lake Michigan views are basically autumn showing off. Colors there typically peak around mid-October, slightly later because of the lakeshore influence.

Michigan Fall is Better Away From Your Yard

Maybe that's my goal this year: stop treating leaves exclusively as debris. Go see them while they're still attached to something.

Because they're gorgeous in the Porkies. They're slightly less inspiring when clogging my gutters.
