When it comes to financing a car, do you live within your means?

A new study by the personal finance website WalletHub reveals that residents of some Michigan cities tend to overspend on their automobiles.

Researchers looked at the average car loan debt in each of more than 2500 American cities (as reported by TransUnion), and compared it to the amount of money that people in each of those cities make (according to the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey).

More than 80 Michigan cities were included in the WalletHub survey.

Here in the Mitten State, the data reveals that the average person is spending roughly 27% of their income on an auto loan. That's actually lower than the national average, which is closer to 34%.

As you might expect, more affluent Michigan towns like Bloomfield Hills, BirminghamNorthville, and Rochester Hills are among the places that carry the least automotive debt - averaging 11% and 14% of residents' incomes.

That doesn't necessarily mean the state's most economically depressed cities are at the tip-top of the overspenders' list. While Flint and Detroit are in the Top 10, they're both far from being #1.

Places like Lansing (#31) and Grand Rapids (#39) didn't even crack Michigan's Top 25 when it comes to overspending on cars. So, who did?
