One of the most iconic landmarks in Michigan's Upper Peninsula is preparing for something huge—a massive comeback that's been a long time in the making. However, this time around it's going to bigger and better than ever.

Closed since 1994, Copper Peak, home to one of the world’s largest artificial ski jumps, is gearing up to reclaim its spot as a must-visit destination for ski fans. Technically, it's already a must-visit spot, having recently made The Today Show's list of top autumn destinations for 2024. It’s easily one of the most stunning spots in Michigan.

Even though the ski jump has been closed for decades, visitors have been able to hike, bike, and take the chairlift up the mountain to take in the breathtaking views of the Upper Peninsula, Canada, Wisconsin, and Minnesota (on a clear day).

Located near Ironwood, Michigan, Copper Peak will soon be undergoing major renovations to become the largest ski-jumping hill in the world. According to UP Travel, once the updates are complete, it will hold the record as the biggest human-made, FIS-certified ski jump on the planet. It's going to be nothing short of amazing.

Before you know it, you'll be seeing ski-jumping teams from all over the world—including Austria, Germany, Finland, Norway, Poland, and more—competing on what will be the most impressive ski jump in the world.

Currently, the Copper Peak ski jump stands 469 feet in the air.

Copper Peak

The Copper Peak ski jump is made from 300 tons of sturdy COR-TEN steel and boasts a 469-foot cantilevered inrun with a 35-degree slope. It’s built to withstand even the strongest winds, including speeds of over 190 mph.

When Will Copper Peak Reopen?

After a brief conversation with Copper Peak, I was told that their goal is to reopen in 2026. However, they are still trying to raise funds to finish the entire renovation. With your help, they can make it happen.
