There always seems to be some confusion around whether or not you can pass someone on the right on a two-lane road. Why would you ever need to pass someone on the right? This usually happens when someone is making a left turn on a two-lane road, and there is oncoming traffic, which forces the person making the left to sit there with their blinker on.
Some drivers can become impatient and resort to driving off the road onto the shoulder to pass the car attempting to make a left. It might save you a few seconds, but is it legal?
Is Passing on the Right of a Two-Lane Road Illegal in Michigan?
According to Michigan.gov, the answer is yes and no.
Passing a vehicle on the right is allowed but don't drive on the shoulder or off the road to do so. Passing on the right should only be done in certain circumstances. When there is enough room on a two-lane road and the vehicle you want to pass is turning left. On a one-way street with more than one lane.
If someone is making a left and you drive off the road to get around them, you could get a ticket.
The best thing to do is be patient and wait for the vehicle in front of you to turn.
