Mystery Surrounds Death of 12-Year-Old Michigan Girl

What Investigators Know So Far Involving 12-Year-Old's Death

Olivia Smith died Tuesday night after an incident outside a friend's home in Kawkawlin Township. A 911 call reported that she had run face-first into a tree and was unconscious, but investigators say they are not ready to conclude that's what happened.

Ring camera footage reportedly shows Olivia walking away from the house just minutes before the emergency call was placed. She was rushed to the hospital, where she later died.

Medical Examiner Calls Olivia Smith Case Unusual

The Bay County Medical Examiner says this is an unusual case and that there is no immediate explanation for what caused Olivia's death according to WJRT. Officials are awaiting a full autopsy report and additional testing before drawing any conclusions, saying they want the evidence and medical findings to determine what happened.

Olivia's family says they do not believe she simply ran into a tree. In a statement, they said they have additional information they cannot release while the investigation continues and are asking anyone who witnessed what happened, or has photos or videos from that evening, to contact investigators.

Conflicting Stories From Witnesses

Authorities are also looking into conflicting witness accounts, including reports that Olivia may have been chased before she collapsed.
