With wildfires happening in West Michigan as well, will it affect West Michigan soon?

Canada Wildfire

Over the past six weeks, extreme wildfires have been spreading across Canada.

CBS News says that it has been

burning through more than 3.3 million hectares of land - larger than the state of Maryland.

Much like our country, Canada has been experiencing record highs of high and drought recently.

As of now, the wildfires have affected several areas in the United States, including New York City, Washington, Philadelphia, and Detroit.

CBS News says that as of Wednesday morning,

Detroit was ranked second for worst air quality, according to the IQAir Air Quality Index, which compares air quality in cities around the world. Delhi, India took the top spot for worst air quality, followed by Detroit and then New York City.

As of 9:45 AM on June 8th, Detroit has moved down the list to ranking at number 5.

Will The Smoke Affect West Michigan?

It already has been affecting West Michigan.

However, unlike a few weeks ago, the smoke now is lower in the atmosphere so it can be clearly spotted on weather satellite imagery.

On Saturday, June 3rd, smoke was seen in the Grand Rapids area just before sunset.

Also over the weekend, according to ABC 13, crews were battling a large wildfire in Crawford County.

Despite the smoke/haze originating from Canada, fire danger across the entire state of Michigan remains at a 'Extreme' level - the highest level issued from the Department of Natural Resources.

Also with the lack of rain, pollen levels will go up as well.

If you want to track the smoke affecting the air quality, you can track it here.
