West Michigan Whitecaps Player Loses Mind (And Shirt) After Historic Win
Talk about a storybook ending.
In front of a roaring Sunday evening crowd of more than 6,100 fans at LMCU Ballpark, West Michigan Whitecaps infielder Izaac Pacheco cemented his name in franchise history with one dramatic swing.
(You can almost see the "oh my god!" on his face)
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth and the Whitecaps trailing the Great Lakes Loons 2-1, Pacheco crushed a no-doubt grand slam over the right-field wall, which marked the first walk-off grand slam in franchise history, and delivered the West Michigan Whitecaps a stunning 5-2 win.
The crowd erupted. Pacheco sprinted toward his teammates in a blur of joy before tearing off his jersey in celebration, arms raised in triumph. It wasn’t just a win—it was a moment.
The best part? It was a moment no could have imagined coming earlier in the game. The Whitecaps hadn’t recorded a single hit through the first seven innings as Loons pitchers kept them off balance. Great Lakes took an early 1-0 lead in the fourth on a sac fly by Jake Gelof and added another in the eighth after a brief tie courtesy of a Seth Stephenson solo shot.
But baseball has a way of flipping the script.

After a wild relay throw by West Michigan cut down a potential insurance run at the plate in the top of the ninth, the Whitecaps rallied—loading the bases with nobody out. That’s when Pacheco stepped in and launched himself into Whitecaps lore. He ran across the field in joy, stripping off his shirt and losing his mind with his teammates.
The win bumps West Michigan to a league-best 30-15 record and extends their lead in the Midwest League East.
