Why West Michigan’s Cold Stretch Feels Endless Right Now
It feels like West Michigan has been stuck inside a snowglobe that someone forgot to put back on the shelf. January has been a month where the snow just keeps falling, the air never really warms up, and every morning starts with that same quiet, bitter painful cold.
If you’ve been waiting for a break, I hate to break it to you, it’s not coming anytime soon.
To find even a few days that might climb above 32 degrees, you have to scroll pretty far ahead into the forecast. And before we get anywhere close to that, there’s another round of Arctic air settling in this week.
To really drive home that you’re not crazy about being exhausted by this winter, this week is shaping up to be much colder than normal, even by January standards.
There is some good news, if you squint hard enough. This weekend should mark the beginning of a very slow warm-up. (Thin baby steps) The most reliable weather models are lining up on a window where we might finally flirt with 32 degrees somewhere between February 2 and February 6.
If you’re looking for a realistic target, February 4 to February 6 feels like the earliest we could see that first above-freezing day. And even then, it’s more “maybe” than “finally.”
As frustrating as it feels, this is a common pattern for this time of winter in the mitten state. Late January and early February are historically the coldest stretch of winter in Michigan, so we’re in the thick of it right now.
For now, the snowglobe stays closed. Bundle up, give your car extra time in the morning, and remind yourself that every day on the calendar is still moving us forward, even if it doesn’t feel like it when you step outside.
