The Life-Saving Garage Door Hack Every Michigander Should Know
I've seen several people post online that they became trapped inside their houses and couldn't leave because they lost power and were unable to open their electric garage door opener.
Experiencing a power outage can be frustrating, especially if your electric garage door opener stops working. However, there's a simple way to regain use of the garage door when the power goes out.

If you find yourself with a stuck garage door, here's what you should do:
Check the Power Source: Before attempting to manually open the garage door, check that the power outage is not due to a tripped circuit breaker or a GFCI outlet issue.
Check your electrical panel for any tripped breakers and reset them if necessary.
If your garage door opener is plugged into a GFCI outlet, it may need to be reset as well
Use the Manual Release Cord: Most electric garage door openers are equipped with a manual release mechanism, which allows you to operate the door without power.
- Locate the Manual Release Cord: This cord is typically red and hangs from the garage door track near the opener.
- Pull the Manual Release Cord: Ensure the garage door is fully closed before pulling this cord. Pulling it disengages the opener from the door, allowing you to lift it manually.
- Lift the Door: With the opener disengaged, you can now lift the garage door by hand. If it feels heavy or difficult to lift, there may be issues with the springs or cables

Hopefully, you never have to deal with this, but if it comes up, you'll know what to do.
