Melissa McCarthy In Talks to Play Ursula in Live-Action ‘Little Mermaid’
Disney’s already remade Aladdin. The remake of The Lion King is weeks away. Cinderella, The Jungle Book, Dumbo, Pete’s Dragon, Beauty and the Beast — all done. So what’s left? One of the biggest titles in the bunch if The Little Mermaid, the beloved 1989 feature that’s considered the start of the so-called “Disney Renaissance.”
As Disney preps its live-action version of the undersea tale, there’s a lot of buzz about the cast. Disney and the production team behind it are looking to make contemporary and compelling casting choices, while still paying homage to the beloved animated original. “Mary Poppins Returns” director Rob Marshall is helming. The film will incorporate the original songs from the 1989 animated hit as well as new tunes from Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda. Miranda is also producing the film along with Marshall, Marc Platt and John DeLuca. David Magee wrote the script.
The big, bold Ursula does seem like a role McCarthy could really turn into something special; veteran actress Pat Carroll voiced the role in the original animated film. And new songs from Miranda, who worked on the delightful Moana (and the great musical Hamilton, obviously) is another very tantalizing facet. Cast Christopher Walken as Scuttle the seagull and we’re really in business.
