Memorial Planned For 1-Year Anniversary of the Kalamazoo Shootings
On the one-year anniversary of the day that a gunman shot and killed 6 people and injured two others in Kalamazoo, the community will gather to honor the victims.
The memorial will be held on February 20, 2017, and will honor both the victims and the survivors of the shootings. The community will also honor police and first responders.
A candlelight vigil will be held starting at 6:30 p.m. at Wings Event Center in Kalamazoo. The vigil will be led by Pastor Paul Fazio.
On February 20, 2016, 45-year-old Jason Dalton opened fire at an apartment complex, a car dealership, and a Cracker Barrel restaurant parking lot.
Tyler Smith, 17; Rich Smith, 53; Mary Jo Nye, 60; Mary L. Nye, 62; Barbara Hawthorne, 68; and Dorothy "Judy" Brown, 70, all died in the attacks.
Abigail Kopf and Tiana Carruthers were shot, but survived, and continue to deal with physical and emotional issues following the shooting.
Dalton is facing six open murder charges.
