Folks in Michigan who love to camp are about to see an increase in price if they generally camp at state campgrounds.

It's the first time that rates have been increased in three years.

As a person who camps exactly one time every summer, I don't generally pay attention to the rates. I pay what I need and I go about my business. But the other day I was trying to book sites for our trip this summer and noticed a message at the top of the page telling me that fees were about to go up.

I decided to do a little digging, and it's not just a cancellation fee change (which has happened in the past). No, the fees for many sites are going up starting on August 1, 2025, at Michigan state parks.

Michigan State Parks Fees Increasing in August 2025

According to a release from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, the fee increases are to "help ensure the long-term sustainability of state park operations."

Here's a look at the increases campers will see starting in August.

Modern and semi-modern sites will increase anywhere from $4 to $10 per day, depending on the park.

Lodges at state parks will also increase in price, but the increase will come in phases and will be capped at $236 per night.

Overall, most sites at most parks will increase with the DNR saying,

State park camp and overnight lodging – rates & operating dates (2025)All overnight lodging rates are being adjusted to be more consistent with fewer rates. The rates will range from $60 to $120 per night; deluxe lodging will be $160 per night. Locations with 85% or higher occupancy rates will incur a 7.5% premium fee per night.

Good news for rustic campers - fees for those sites will not increase.

Last year, a state representative from Cheboygan introduced a bill that would allow Michigan residents to get first dibs on campsites at state parks. That bill has seemingly stalled.
