Michigan’s Biggest Crop Can’t Compete at the State Fair… Yet

Michigan’s State Fair is a great time. From fried food and Ferris wheels to prize-winning pumpkins and livestock with better grooming routines than most of us, it’s a solid celebration of everything Pure Michigan.

But when it comes to truly honoring all the state’s booming industries, there’s one glaring omission: cannabis.

Currently, Michigan is home to one of the fastest-growing and nationally respected legal cannabis markets, and somehow, we still haven’t rolled out the green carpet for this billion-dollar crop at the State Fair.

Meanwhile, California is already miles ahead of us here in the mitten

At this year’s California State Fair Cannabis Awards, they raked in over 600 entries, with cultivators competing in 3 flower categories across 11 chemotypes and 6 product types. For only the second year of the competition, that’s massive.

It’s not just a popularity contest, the awards are backed by serious science, including testing from SC Labs and expert judging through Budist. This is a platform that brings together connoisseurs, certified Ganjiers, and longtime industry pros just like any other category in the fair's judging.

And it’s not just about trophies. California’s fair also includes the Cannabis Experience, an educational hub that explores the plant’s cultural, historical, and agricultural value, all wrapped in an inviting, hands-on display.

So why not here in Michigan?

Cannabis is legal, regulated, and bringing real jobs and revenue to Michigan. If we can crown the best cherry pie or champion goat, surely we can celebrate our top-tier flower and edibles too.

Giving cannabis a place at the fair doesn’t mean turning the midway into a dispensary; it means giving recognition where it’s due and teaching the public about a crop that’s become a key player in our economy.

It’s time for the Michigan State Fair to truly represent all of Michigan. And that includes the cannabis growers who are just as passionate, hardworking, and innovative as any other farmer in the field. Let’s give them a ribbon already.
