Michigan Drivers Can Expect Gas Prices Below $3 For Majority of 2026
If you’ve been waiting for a sign to finally take that road trip around Michigan (or further), this might be it.
Michigan drivers are starting 2026 with gas prices we haven’t seen in years, and experts say this could be the cheapest year at the pump since 2021. For anyone who loves a scenic drive up north, a weekend in Chicago (traffic aside), or a spontaneous trip to Detroit, 2026 is shaping up to be the year of the road trip.
Here in Grand Rapids and across West Michigan, prices are already noticeably lower, and forecasts suggest they’ll stay that way for most of the year. According to GasBuddy, the average American household is expected to spend about $2,083 on gasoline in 2026, with the national average sitting around $2.97 per gallon.
There will still be a few bumps that will knock gas above the $3 mark throughout the year though. Summer usually pushes prices up, and experts say we’ll probably see gas creep just over the $3 mark during peak travel months.
Spring break is another moment to watch, with national averages expected to climb into the $3.20 range. But even then, it’s not expected to get wildly expensive.
Geography still matters. The closer you get to the South and the Gulf, the cheaper gas tends to be. If you head west on I-94 toward Chicago, brace yourself. Chicago is expected to have some of the highest prices in the country, averaging above $3 per gallon. The same road trip, can have very different receipts based on where you stop to fill up.
Unless there’s a major conflict or refinery issue, experts expect gas prices to hover around or below $3 for most of 2026. So, maybe this is the year you finally map out that Lake Michigan loop, plan the long drive to a concert, or just say yes to a last-minute weekend away.
Cheap gas doesn’t solve everything, but it does make the open road feel a little more accessible again.
