Stop Worrying About Mosquitos And Focus on These 5 West Michigan Pests Instead
Summer is here, and it always feels like the one best we're most adamant about keeping away is mosquitos.
And in most of the United States, that's probably a fair top concern, but here in Michigan? Not so much.
In fact, according to new data from Insuranks says that Michigan is actually the least mosquito prone state in the country. Meaning, you're less likely to get bit than any other state.
In fact, Michigan only has 5 species of mosquitos, compared to a majority of states that have anywhere from 20-50 types each. Our cooler climate and shorter summers make it hard for a lot of mosquito species to survive.
That doesn't mean you won't see them around, and that you should skip the spray, but these pests should be at the top of your list to be watching for when you head outside this summer.
1. Ticks
Ticks carry disease and problems of all kinds, but Michigan is also one of the states that has the potential for you to find the terrifying "lone star ticks" that will cause you to be allergic to red meat if you're bit.
2. Fleas
Fleas don't always come inside on your dogs or cats that aren't treated with medicine, sometimes they can ride inside on your socks and clothing if you find them out in nature.
Make sure you keep an eye out for these pests after your trip outside so you don't have to fight a battle inside your home.
3. Brown Recluse and Black Widow spiders
While most spiders just want to hang out in your garden and help you keep the pests at bay, these two spiders aren't quite as friendly.
You may be able spot a black widow thanks to TV and movies, but the brown recluse can look a little more "generic". If you are bit by a spider that you're unsure of, check with your doctor ASAP because both of these bites can be deadly if left untreated for too long.
4. Bed Bugs
While you won't find these out in your yard, but you'd be shocked at how common they are out in public.
From returned clothing at stores, used furniture, and even riding in an uber or lyft you could come in contact with these hard to battle pests. So check everything before you bring it inside to make sure you're not susceptible
How can you prevent these pests from bothering you this summer?
Experts say that wearing clothing that covers you helps, because bugs are less likely to bite through clothing.
You can also use an insect repellent with DEET, but you should be mindful of how much you’re exposing kids to.
And for those mosquitos that are hanging out in your backyard this summer...
