The Secret to a Perfect Summer Lawn in Michigan Starts in Early Spring
As we go through what feels like our third or fourth false spring, it’s a reminder that Michigan winters can feel never-ending. Even though it may be snowing occasionally, spring is finally here which means it’s time to start thinking about getting our yards back in shape.
While the snow might not be completely gone yet, you can start planning now so you’re ready to go when the weather finally cooperates.

Here’s a handy guide of things you can start working on month by month now, so that by the time the snow melts and the leaves reappear on your trees, you’ll be well ahead of your neighbors on having the best green space for the best time of the year.
Starting in Late March / Early April:
As soon as the snow fully melts and the ground begins to thaw, it’s time to start the cleaning up your yard. Rake up any leftover leaves, branches, or debris that winter left behind and give that grass and those plant beds some room to breathe.
Speaking of breathing, this is also the perfect time to aerate your lawn if it’s compacted. You can also apply a pre-emergent herbicide to prevent weeds from taking over before they even sprout. Talk about getting ahead of the season!
Mid To Late April:
At this time, soil temperatures will start to rise, making it a good time to plant hardy perennials, shrubs, and trees. This is also when you’ll want to over seed your lawn if you have patchy areas from years gone by or pets. (Just make sure to skip the herbicide in these spots so the grass seed can take root.)
If you’re planning on adding mulch, edging flower beds, or tackling bigger landscaping projects, late April is also a great time to get started on that project.
May: Time to add the final touches!
By early May, the risk of frost in most of Michigan drops significantly, meaning it’s safe to start planting annuals, vegetables, and herbs.
This is also a great time to fertilize your lawn to give it the nutrients it needs to thrive all summer long.
So if you want the perfect lawn and yard to enjoy during the most perfect time of year in Michigan, you’ll want to start taking steps that way you aren’t weeks or months behind everyone else as they’re lounging around and enjoying the sun.
