Kent Innovation High School opened in Grand Rapids today.  As the name suggests, they take a unique approach to education.

Students do not use textbooks, instead they utilize laptops and flat screen TVs.  Students work in small groups, instead of individually.  And the school itself does not look like any other school you have seen.  The high ceilings, walls lined with flat screen TVs, and furniture resemble a corporate office more than they do a high school.

Kent Innovation High School is located on the campus of Kent Intermediate School District at 1655 East Beltline Ave. NE.  100 students from all over Kent County have been enrolled as freshmen this year.  Each of the next 3 years will see new freshman classes of 100 until the school reaches its capacity of 400 students.

This is a very interesting approach and is part of a state-wide push to launch as many as 12 new tech schools by next year.
