You Can Watch ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ At the Movie Theater Sharon Tate Visits in ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’
In Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie) spends a blissful day in Westwood Village, shopping in book stores and visiting the Bruin Theatre to watch The Wrecking Crew, a movie she appears in. Sneaking into the auditorium after the lights have gone down, she watches as she interacts onscreen with Dean Martin. The rest of the audience at the Bruin laughs and applauds in appreciation. Sharon is elated.
It’s a lovely sequence, maybe the sweetest of director Quentin Tarantino’s entire career. And, in an interesting twist of fate, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is now playing at ... the Bruin Theatre in Westwood. So if you’re in LA, you could watch Margot Robbie as Sharon Tate in the Bruin at the Bruin. (I don’t know the exact seat she sits in; someone should figure that out.)
The Bruin first opened for business in 1937. It was designed by S. Charles Lee, an architect known for his movie palaces. In Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Tarantino follows Tate as she walks across the street from the Fox Village Theatre to the Bruin; that theatre is also still in existence, and still regularly plays movies and hosts premieres. (It’s currently showing The Lion King.)
I can’t speak to the visual or audio quality at the Bruin, but it seems like a very unique place to interact with the cinema history that’s so crucial Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. I don’t know their policy on bare feet either, so I would probably keep my shoes on just in case.
