If you’ve lived in Michigan long enough, you know the drill—months of cold, gray skies, and what feels like an eternal lack of sunshine. While there’s a certain beauty to winter in our state, it’s no secret that the long, dark days can take a toll on your mood. Seasonal depression, or Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), is a real struggle for many Michiganders, and it’s nothing to be ashamed of.

The good news? There are ways to combat those winter blues and bring some light—literally—back into your life.

One of the most effective tools I’ve found is using a UV light or “happy light.” These specialized lamps mimic natural sunlight and can work wonders in boosting your mood. Just 20-30 minutes a day of sitting near one can make a noticeable difference. Think of it as bringing a little sunshine to your desk or living room. (They also make neat glasses you can wear if you don't have space for the lamp.)

Vitamin D is another game-changer. Without regular sunlight, our bodies can’t produce enough of it, and that deficiency can impact your energy levels and mood. A simple vitamin D supplement (or foods like salmon, fortified milk, and eggs) can help keep your levels up during the darker months.

Beyond that, don’t underestimate the power of movement. Even a short walk outside—even if it’s cloudy—can improve your mood. Personally, I like to go to the Woodland Mall and Rivertown Mall and just walk around inside and window shop. I'll take my son too and enjoy the indoor play spaces, because little guys get stir-crazy too.

The extra steps and seeing others helps me feel better- and let's be honest, occasionally a treat here and there never hurts (as long as you aren't hurting your budget)

And don’t forget to lean on your support system. Stay connected with friends and family, even if it’s just a quick phone call or coffee date. If your family isn't close, you can always Facetime and watch movies together via streaming platforms. My friends and I love to have a Godzilla watch party from the comfort of our separate couches, and we have so much fun in our group chat making jokes and enjoying the movie together.

Winter in Michigan is tough, but it doesn’t have to define your mental health. With small, intentional steps, you can keep the seasonal blues at bay and get through to the sunnier days ahead.
