Could Sandy the Pony Disappear From Michigan Meijer Locations Thanks To New Law?
Whenever a new President takes office, changes are inevitable. From Washington D.C. to Lansing, the changes in policy can be felt. But, no one expects there to be a law proposed that would get rid of one of the most iconic parts of your childhood.
They want to get rid of Sandy the Pony... or at least, a new law may accidentally do so.
A new idea proposed by Elon Musk suggests that the U.S Treasury should do away with the penny, and instead round up and down to 5 cent intervals. The logic behind the idea is seemingly sound: Each penny costs .03 to produce, meaning we are creating them at a loss of their worth, so why continue to do so?
I argue there's one important reason we need to keep the penny- because it costs a penny to ride Sandy the Pony at Meijer. If there are no more pennies, how will kids across Michigan get to enjoy one of the purest forms of joy at the end of their grocery trip?
Sandy the Pony has cost a penny since 1962, when 10 white horses were placed in the front of the Thrifty Acres Meijer Superstore. They stared at a dime each to ride, but the price was slashed to a penny so they could always be "affordable fun". Even as the penny drops in value- we've always had a reason to save them for that little one in our life who wants a ride.
Maybe Meijer will upgrade all of the machines to take a nickel, or maybe they'll just say goodbye to a bygone era if pennies do go away. All I know is, I now find myself defending a currency I barely care about because my son loves that pretty penny pony. And hey, all the pennies won't just disappear so maybe that change is a long way down the line and we don't have much to worry about just yet.
I try not to get political, but I'm gonna be honest- there's a place and time to put your foot down. (Apparently, my line in the sand is a mechanical pony in the front of every Meijer that costs a penny.)
