Sears have confirmed that their store at Woodland Mall will soon be closing its doors for good.

Today (January 4) employees of 26 Sears stores and 78 Kmart stores across the country were notified that their stores would be closing.

Sears says that liquidation sales at some of these locations will begin as soon as January 6.

Sears says the stores closing were chosen based on their financial performance.

The decision to close stores is a difficult but necessary step as we take actions to strengthen the Company’s operations and fund its transformation. Many of these stores have struggled with their financial performance for years and we have kept them open to maintain local jobs and in the hopes that they would turn around.

The Sears store at Woodland Mall has been there since the beginning. Sears was built as one of the anchor stores when the mall opened back in 1968.

WOOD-TV8 reports that mall management would not say specifically what will be going into the space once it's vacated, but said they have "exciting" plans.

The Sears at Rivertown Mall will remain open.
